So now the dust is settling, protesting has come to an end, people are no longer posting on social media, that black square is moving further and further down our feed… I want to remind you that Black Lives STILL Matter, and their lives are still in danger. Innocent people are still being murdered because of the colour of their skin, and those who have been murdered still have no justice.
This fight is not over, we still have so much further to go. I hope you have taken the time to educate yourselves, to watch documentaries, to read books, to follow people taking the time to educate on social media. We must make sure that this movement continues and change is made. In the age of information ignorance is a choice and ignorance is dangerous.
We must continue to have conversations about racism, this topic should not make you feel uncomfortable if you are not a racist. In fact it is a privilege to learn about racism and not have to experience it. So use your privilege and stand up for what is right. Just because #BLM is no longer trending does not mean you can now sit back and allow people to get away with being racist. It is your duty as a fellow human to pick up on their hate no matter how hard the conversation is.
Black lives matter does not mean that anyone is better than the next person, it means we are all equal. No one is hurt for equality. It breaks my heart that people are protesting against black lives “mattering.” To matter is the absolute minimum. Black lives are worthy of more than just to “matter.” They are loved and needed. The pure fact that humanity needs to clarify this is the biggest concern of all.
“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppression.” – Desmond Tutu.
No lives matter until black lives matter.
