5 Ways You Can Be The Change!

What does “be the change you wish to see in the world” mean?

To me personally it means the world. I remember my grandfather telling me this quote when I was young and since then it has stuck with me.

At this moment in time the way the world and society has become, change is inevitable. However, something I got stuck doing recently is trying to make changes ahead of time. When not only I wasn’t ready, but the world was not ready for me.

So what can we do in order to be the change we wish to see?

1. Change the way in which we see the fashion industry.

The fashion industry has become one of the deadliest industries out there. It is an industry like make others that just focused on making money and the expense of the poor. People are willing to cut any corner in order to make clothes as cheap as possible and earn a large profit. However, fast fashion is never cheap, someone out there is always paying for it. Whether that be the workers who are working in horrific working environments, or Mother Earth. Fast fashion is not designed to last. It is throw away fashion, sold cheap in order to make consumers consume frequently. This is why there is so much waste in this world.

So how do we change this?

Buy second hand from charity shops or online like Ebay or Depop. This means that the clothes have already served their purpose, you are just giving them another chance at life when someone is finished with them.

Make sure to only shop from eco friendly retailers. There are so many amazing companies out there whose prime purpose is to look after their workers. Know exactly who made your clothes.

2. Eat Ethically

Personally, I am a vegetarian. Although I do steer clear of any animal produce, I do not label myself as a vegan. There seems to be a huge amount of pressure that comes with the word vegan, so I try not to label myself in case I slip up.

However, avoiding any animal produce is something amazing you can do. Even if you begin by eating meat free five days a week and ‘treating’ yourself on the weekend. Every little helps.

The way in which animals are treated is horrific, just for our enjoyment. Some animals such as cows are also so damaging for our universe, so the sooner we stop producing them, the better.

3. Stop producing so much waste

Plastic is one of the biggest strains on our environment, especially our oceans and sea life. It has been said by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans unless we take action. Only 9% of our plastic waste has only ever actually been recycled. 700 or so marine species have been found entangled in plastic.

These are just a few examples on what plastic is doing to our world… So how do we make a difference?

Since the 5p plastic bag change, over 9 billion plastic bags have been used in England alone. This is clear evidence that we are capable of making a difference. Stop using as much plastic at home. Use a bamboo toothbrush rather that a plastic one, use bars of shampoo rather than plastic bottles. Tried to avoid buying food that is packaged in plastic, especially your fruit and vegetables.

4. Clean up after yourself

If you go to a beach or a park to enjoy this beautiful weather, please clean up your rubbish and don’t leave any behind. It is that simple. You took it with you, you clean it up.

If you are walking down the street and you see that someone else has left rubbish, pick it up and throw it in the bin. 5 a day and the world will become a lot cleaner.

5. Be Kind

Be kind to others, the universe and animals. It shouldn’t be too much to ask.

Treat people the way you wish to be treated and remember that everyone is human and on their own journey. Do not judge anyone as you do not know what they have been through or how far they have come. Be the light that lights up the darkest hours.

We are always waiting for someone else to make a difference and a change. But we need to realise that if we desperately want the world to change, then we must start with ourselves first.

Peace, Love&Light x
